Pharmacological properties
Cabergoline is a derivative compound of ergot. The mechanism of action involves direct interaction with the dopamine receptor on lactotropic cells of the pituitary gland, leading to inhibition of prolactin secretion by the pituitary, the main hormone of lactogenesis. The decrease in prolactin levels prevents lactation and contributes to the disappearance of clinical signs of pseudopregnancy in bitches and queens.
After oral administration, the peak suppression of prolactin secretion is reached within 4-8 hours and lasts for several days, depending on the dose. The anti-
