Megestrol acetate is a synthetic progestogen that blocks the secretion of follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland.
The lack of these hormones delays the maturation of follicles in the ovaries of females and ovulation, stops the heat cycle and sexual desire. It affects the endometrium of the uterus and induces its secretory phase, which inhibits embryo implantation and provides the contraceptive effect of the drug.
