Pharmacological properties:
The mechanism of the antimicrobial action of streptocid is associated with its competitive antagonism with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Due to its chemical similarity to PABA, the drug prevents its incorporation into dihydrofolic acid. In addition, it competitively inhibits dihydropteroate synthetase. Disruption of dihydrofolic acid synthesis reduces the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid from it, which is necessary for the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine bases. As a result, the synthesis of nucleic acids is inhibited, leading to the suppression of microbial growth and reproduction.
