Florfenicol is a derivative of thiamphenicol, where the hydroxyl group is replaced by a fluorine atom. Active against pathogens producing acetyltransferase and resistant to chloramphenicol, it provides a bacteriostatic and bactericidal action by binding in the bacterial cell protoplasm with the ribosomal subunit 70S of bacteria, blocking the enzyme peptidyltransferase, leading to disruption of organisms.
