Butorphanol is an analgesic from the group of synthetic opioids with an agonist/antagonist effect, which is a derivative of phenanthrene. The mechanism of action involves stimulation of κ-opioid receptor subtypes and mixed stimulation and inhibition of μ-opioid receptor subtypes. As a result, the interneuronal transmission of pain impulses in various parts of the CNS, including the cerebral cortex, is blocked.
